Lithium Niobate (LiNbO3) or LN crystal is widely used as frequency doublers for wave length over 1um and optical parametric oscillators (OPOs) pumped at 1064nm and quasi-phase-matched (QPM) devices.
Itionally due to its large Elector-Optic (EO) and Acousto-Optic (AO) coefficients, Lithium Niobate ( LiNbO3) is the most commonly used material for Pockels Cell , Q-switchs and phase nodulators, waveguide substrate, and surface acoustic wave (SAW) wafers, etc.
We have performed an atomistic simulation study of the defect structure of Lithium Niobate LiNbO3 crystals resulting from LiO deficiency and reduction treatments. LiO excess is found to be unlikely in Lithium Niobate LiNbO3 crystals. It is shown that oxygen vacancies are not the dominant intrinsic defect species in Lithium Niobate LiNbO3. Important defects are (Nband isolated Nbantisites.
Small regions of Lithium Niobate LiNbO3 with ilmenite-like cation-stacking sequence are likely to occur; thus Nbdefects in Lithium Niobate LiNbO3 should be interpreted as Li vacancies within ilmenite-like crystal regions.
